Fourth Grade Literacy
Reader's Workshop:
We kicked off the school year by launching the Reader's Workshop. The Workshop begins with a 15 minute shared reading lesson led by Mrs. D. This is followed by 30 minutes of independent reading and 15 minutes of small group work. In fourth grade, we focus on writing about our reading, as well. Our units of study include Literary Elements, Traditional Literature, How to Study a Concept, Informational Reading, and How to Study a Person.
Writer's Workshop:
Using the Lucy Calkins Writing Workshop Curriculum, fourth graders write narrative, opinion, informational, and literary essays. Each day, our Writer's Workshop begins with a 15 minute mini-lesson at the rug area. Once students have actively engaged in the lesson's teaching point, they will independently write. Mrs. D. will confer with students independently, in small groups, and in partnerships. Our first unit of study, narrative writing, focuses on realistic fiction writing. Students will develop believable characters and create a story for those characters.
